Analysis Note
India's textile sector shows a mixed picture across the metrics tracked here. Yarn and fabric production fell sharply after FY 2019–20 — yarn from 410.8 lakh kg to just 23.8 lakh kg by FY 2021–22, and fabric from 88.9 to 2.5 lakh metres over the same window — while the cotton production index held up better, moving from 119.3 (FY 2016–17) to a peak of 148.5 (FY 2019–20) before easing to 126.1 by FY 2024–25. Trade has stayed firmly in surplus: exports ranged between roughly $30.9B and $43.4B across FY 2017–18 to FY 2025–26, consistently more than triple imports, which grew from $7.0B to $11.4B over the same period, narrowing the trade surplus somewhat in percentage terms even as it stayed large in absolute dollars. Cotton MSP has risen steadily every year on record, roughly doubling for both medium and long staple varieties between FY 2016–17 and FY 2024–25. FDI inflows, by contrast, have declined markedly — from $606 million in FY 2016–17 to just $123 million in FY 2022–23 — a signal worth watching alongside the fall in registered mills count over the same years.
