Analysis Note

Direct QSR employment has grown roughly 2.4x over the last 12 years, from 13.3 lakh to 32.0 lakh persons, closely tracking the sector's store-count expansion rather than outpacing it — consistent with a labor-intensive format where headcount scales with outlets opened. The one break in this trend was FY 2020–21, when workforce fell to 14.0 lakh (a ~24% drop) as pandemic closures forced layoffs, before rebounding sharply to 19.5 lakh the following year and continuing to accelerate since, in line with the post-COVID surge in new store openings. Crew-per-store staffing norms (6–25 staff depending on format) have stayed structurally unchanged through this period, indicating that employment growth has been driven almost entirely by network expansion rather than any shift in per-store staffing intensity.
