India's chemicals & petrochemicals trade has shown strong growth. Exports of chemicals (excluding pharma & fertilizers) grew from ₹2.19 lakh crore in FY18 to ₹3.93 lakh crore in FY25 (CAGR 8.7%). Imports grew from ₹3.18 lakh crore to ₹6.32 lakh crore (CAGR 10.3%), resulting in a widening trade deficit. Pesticides & dyes are net exporters (₹2,215 crore and ₹1,770 crore surplus in FY25), while organic chemicals and plastics remain heavily import-dependent. The petrochemical sector saw total exports of ₹3,893,974 lakh (FY25) and imports of ₹13,683,819 lakh, resulting in a massive net import dependency. In global rankings, India is the 7th largest exporter of organic chemicals and the 4th largest importer of inorganic chemicals. The rupee depreciated from ₹83.4 (Apr-24) to ₹86.6 (Mar-25), making exports more competitive but increasing import costs.
